Throughout the development of the Internet and the World Wide Web as a whole, there have been significant “eras” that have revolutionized the technological world as we know it today. One of these eras was the surge of web pages, more specifically, the development of more personalized websites using CSS and HTML. At the time in which these websites were created, there was a theme shared through all of them, which included but was not limited to bright colors, whether that be as the title or backgrounds, and a lot of images throughout the websites, it was a time in which these websites creators where experimenting with the different abilities and designs that could be achieved with these programming skills. This time also generated a newfound platform for different people to create websites catered to their interests, creating a different way to communicate and form communities through shared interests.
A website I particularly found interesting and representative of the period is a website created to give a platform to different films and movies titled Simply The Best Film Multimedia. The first thing that draws the eye of this website is the border around the home page. Although it does not extend around entirely on the sides, it does go on the left and top border consisting of different movie posters, with a creatively made title in between, in which the letters are once again created with movie posters. This is a very fitting creative strategy, especially during this time, we see the black bold background, which is a defining factor of this area, as most websites hold a bold color as their background. The images as the border and the title created by them once again demonstrated the creative aspect that was happening during this time as we see this creator take a creative approach to creating an unusual title for the website, and a border unlike the usual ones seen in most basic websites. Of course, one of the most eye-catching aspects of this page is that of the moving element before the main written work starts. This serves as both a welcoming message and a way to communicate to the visitors what the latest additions are to the website. This once again adds to the different creative aspects that could be integrated into these websites and adds an extra layer of interactivity that possibly starts to lack, as most of these websites are immutable web pages. The experimentation of HTML and CSS became a means of self-expression, as demonstrated by just the home page, this became an outlet for people to translate their ideas, interests, beliefs, and anything really into digital media, going away from traditional forms of expression. This makes every website a completely different experience catering to the different types of audiences that will visit these websites, forming a different form of interaction, and community. Hence, the new era of personalized websites: a revolutionary way of connecting, expressing, and community building.
Although the site does not offer any information on the creator, the language used throughout the website gives us an insight into the designer’s personality, and of course, their interest as the website is dedicated to. Through the subtle jokes, like stating how they do not know how certain things work, and simply by exploring the different menu sections on the website. One can derive the fact that the designer is a fan of science-fiction and drama movies. Their content, like the wallpapers that are offered, is centered around this type of movie, as well as the film and movie review sections, which start with the classic Matrix movie. This also demonstrates a different type of interactivity among users, as the website offers downloadable wallpapers of movie posters and audio files of movie introductions. Once again, this highlights a new form of self-expression and connection with communities.
The five areas of the Circuit of Culture are evident through the purpose of this site, creating a space for user interactivity and connection through their shared passions and interests.
