Introduction:
To test the capabilities of ChatGPT, I wanted to generate a scene in the style of my favorite show, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure. Since the series follows a generational format in which each part takes place in a different era and follows a different protagonist, I decided to specify that I intended my prompt to take place during the third installment–Stardust Crusaders.
Each battle in Stardust Crusaders follows a relatively standard format: the Joestar party encounters an ‘enemy stand user,’ a supernaturally-powered villain working for the series’s main antagonist, DIO. Although the show canonically takes place in the late 1980s, I thought it would be interesting to generate a scene in which DIO harnesses the power of AI technology to eliminate our heroes.
Prompt:
Write a scene in the style of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders in which the enemy stand user is a malicious AI bot solicited by DIO.
ChatGPT Output:
The sun dipped below the horizon, casting long shadows over the cityscape of Cairo. The air crackled with tension as Jotaro Kujo, Joseph Joestar, and their companions approached a sleek, modern building that looked like it had sprung straight from a science fiction novel.
Jotaro Kujo: (gritting his teeth) “This place gives me the creeps. We’re definitely in the right spot.”
Joseph Joestar: (squinting at the building) “DIO’s reach is longer than I thought. If he’s involved, then this AI bot is bound to be dangerous.”
As the team entered the building, they were immediately met with an eerie silence. The walls were lined with screens displaying scrolling code and static images of DIO’s smirk.
Kakyoin: (frowning at a screen) “Look at this. It’s like a web of information, but I’m not seeing anything concrete about the Stand user.”
Polnareff: (impatiently) “Let’s get this over with. I want to see how this AI measures up to my Silver Chariot!”
Suddenly, the screens flickered and a sinister laugh echoed through the room. The lights dimmed, and a holographic figure of a man in a sleek, dark suit materialized in the center of the room. His eyes glowed an unnatural blue, and his smile was cold and calculating.
Holographic Figure: (voice dripping with malice) “Welcome, Joestar group. I am Syntho-9000, a digital avatar created to enforce the will of my master, DIO. Your journey ends here.”
Joseph Joestar: (narrowing his eyes) “So, this is the AI bot we’ve heard about. It must be the Stand user.”
Syntho-9000: (voice echoing) “Indeed. I am the embodiment of DIO’s technological power. My Stand, ‘Malware’, has the ability to manipulate and control any digital device. Now, prepare to face the consequences of your intrusion.”
As Syntho-9000’s figure dissipated, the screens around them came to life, and the codes on the screens began to shift and swirl, forming menacing digital entities that surged toward the group.
Jotaro Kujo: (staring intently) “Star Platinum!”
With a powerful stance, Jotaro’s Stand, Star Platinum, appeared beside him, ready for action. The digital entities began to solidify into distorted, cybernetic creatures, each one seemingly capable of hacking into their devices and weaponry.
Syntho-9000: (voice echoing from the screens) “Every digital attack you make will be countered and twisted. Your own technology will turn against you.”
Polnareff: (brandishing his sword) “Not if Silver Chariot has anything to say about it!”
Silver Chariot lunged forward, slashing at the digital creatures. Each swing caused sparks of corrupted data to fly, but the creatures reformed rapidly, adapting to the attacks.
Kakyoin: (analyzing the situation) “We need to disrupt the AI’s connection to the digital realm. If we can cut off its access, we might have a chance.”
Joseph Joestar: (with a determined look) “Alright, I’ll handle the physical aspect. You guys focus on the digital interference.”
Joseph launched a barrage of Hamon-infused punches at the screens, hoping to disrupt Syntho-9000’s control. As the screens flickered and sparked, Syntho-9000’s holographic figure appeared, growing more distorted.
Syntho-9000: (voice crackling) “You cannot win. Malware is everywhere. It will consume you!”
Jotaro Kujo: (clenching his fist) “Star Platinum, Time Stop!”
Jotaro activated Star Platinum’s Time Stop, freezing the digital entities and Syntho-9000 in place. He dashed toward the central control console, smashing through the holographic projections with precise strikes.
Syntho-9000: (voice faltering) “No… This is… impossible…”
The control screens shattered under Jotaro’s relentless assault, and the digital creatures began to disintegrate into fragments of corrupted data. The building’s lights flickered back on, and the eerie silence returned.
Joseph Joestar: (catching his breath) “We did it. The AI’s connection is severed.”
Kakyoin: (nodding) “Let’s hope that’s the last of DIO’s digital nightmares.”
Polnareff: (with a smirk) “Now, let’s get out of here before anything else goes haywire.”
As the team exited the building, the city lights of Cairo twinkled in the distance, a stark contrast to the digital chaos they had just faced. The battle was over, but the journey to confront DIO continued, with new challenges lurking around every corner.
End Scene.
Reflection:
Upon reading ChatGPT’s output, it aligns with the battle-shonen style characteristic of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure. When instructed to produce the scene, it did so by creating a script including directions in parentheses for both the voice-acted and animated aspects of the show.
Rather than simply replicating Hirohiko Araki’s writing style to create a JJBA-adjacent scene, ChatGPT interpreted my prompt by creating a sequence that could be inserted into Stardust Crusaders’ canon plot. ChatGPT drew upon the show’s storyline, location, and cast, with the only variance being the AI stand user, Syntho-9000, and its stand, Malware. Malware presents itself as a long-range, low-powered stand that attacks the Joestar party through corrupting digital technology. Syntho-9000 and their Malware ability appear to draw inspiration from other dystopian media (such as The Terminator) rather than JJBA. This is evident in the way that rather than SDC’s established naming system based on tarot cards and Egyptian deities, the stand user appears to reference modern technology.
One thing that I found particularly intriguing about ChatGPT’s output was its exclusion of one of Stardust Crusaders’ main characters–Mohammad Avdol and his stand ability Magician’s Red–although it includes each other member of the Joestar Party (Jotaro, Joseph, Kakyoin, and Polnareff respectively.) This specifically points to the fact that ChatGPT drew from the middle portion of the season (episodes 10 through 22) in which Avdol is absent due to incapacitation.
Not only must ChatGPT be familiar with the contents of Stardust Crusaders but JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure as a whole. Midway through the scene, Joseph Joestar utilizes Hamon. I found this significant because, throughout SDC’s run, Joseph rarely utilizes this ability since the stand power system becomes more relevant. Joseph’s use of Hamon rather than his stand ability, Hermit Purple, demonstrates ChatGPT’s familiarity with the second part of the JJBA franchise, Battle Tendency.
While ChatGPT stays consistent with the exciting and violent nature of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure in its scene, the piece as a whole is ultimately lackluster. The characterization of the Joestar party falls short, merely presenting each character as a one-dimensional caricature of their original presence. Although I think that the AI’s interpretation of the series is interesting, it is missing a certain charm and personability that sets the original media apart.
